Medicating Your Dog

You went to the veterinarian, and he or she prescribed medications to your dog. Now you have to give them their medications every day, but how do you do that? The best thing to do is ask your veterinarian when the medication is prescribed, but there are also some common techniques that you can use and discuss during your next visit to the vet.

The first thing to consider is what kind of medication you are administering. While pills are one of the more common forms of medication, there are also topical ointments and creams, ocular medications, and liquids.

With pills, some people try to hide them in some sort of treat that the dog likes. This works for some dogs, but not all. You may have to place the pill in the back of your dog's mouth and hold it shut until you see your dog lick his or her nose.

Topical medications are fairly easy to administer. You simply have to rub the medication on the affected area of your dog. With ocular medications, things can get a little bit tricky. You have to keep your dog steady and keep the eye open while you administer the medication. On top of that, you have to be careful not to scratch your dog's eye.

With liquid medications, you can sometimes just pour it over your dog’s food. Sometimes, though, you may have to help the liquid down your dog’s throat with a syringe.
