Vacationing Information for Pet Owners

When pet owners decide to go on vacation, they have more things on their mind that just where to go, how in the world to get there, arrival and departure dates, how much to pack, what to pack, the fact that their spouse is packing too much, and so on. Pet owners also have to think about whether or not to take their pet on the vacation with them, if so, how to best transport the pet, and if not, how to be sure the pet is cared for during their absence.

Should You Take Your Pet on Vacation?

Deciding whether or not to take your pet with you on your vacation depends on many factors. You will need to consider where you are going, how far it is from where you live, how long you will be gone, the costs associated with taking the pet versus not taking the pet, and basically whether you really want the pet to even be there. Some people need vacations from their pets, although pets, especially dogs, usually do not want a vacation from their owners. Cats may be indifferent.

Will Your Pet Behave?

Will your animal behave during the vacation if you take it with you? Your pet is likely to behave on vacation the same way that it behaves while at home. If it claws up your furniture, it is likely to claw up the furniture in hotels rooms and cost you damage fees. If your animal is properly trained and house broken, then you probably don't need to be concerned with this aspect of traveling with your pet.

How Far are You Traveling

How far are you traveling? If you are traveling to another country, you need to realize that airlines and cruise lines have storage areas for pets and you may not be able to spend much time with them during the traveling period. There may also be fees and restrictions in other countries associated with bringing in pets. In fact, some countries make it impossible to take your cat or dog with you on a vacation. However, if you are only traveling to another state for your vacation and you live in the US, then traveling with your pet will probably not be much of an issue.
